Many consider gardening to be a relaxing and stress relieving hobby. Knowing which soil to purchase, which horticulture equipment to buy and when to plant your seeds are some of the key questions gardeners are asking. Spend some time relaxing in the sun, tending your garden.
You will need to properly lay sod. Before laying the sod, the soil must be prepared. Eradicate any weeds and work the soil until it is very fine. Flatten the soil back into place, gently but firmly. Now make sure the soil is thoroughly dampened. When laying down sod, create staggered rows with offset joints. Tamp down the sod so it has a flat and even surface, then using some extra soil, fill the gaps between. You will have to water the sod every day for 2 weeks, and then it should be firmly rooted to the ground, and able to be walked on.
Your vegetable garden should get at least six hours of sun daily. Many vegetables need about this much sun to grow quickly. This is true of some flowers.
Coffee Grounds
A simple way to lower the alkaline content of your soil is to dilute it with coffee grounds. Coffee grounds are an affordable means of adding acid to the soil so that it is pH-balanced. You will discover that your vegetables are more flavorful than ever before.
Do you enjoy your mint leaves, but can’t stand how they dominate your garden? Contain their growth with a garden container or large pot instead. The container will keep the roots from spreading throughout you garden, and prevent the mint leaves from sprouting in other areas.
If your gardening plans include pea plantings, try starting them off indoors rather than planting the raw seeds in outdoor beds. Pea seeds germinate better indoors. Give the seeds enough time to get stronger: growing indoors will make it easier for your plants to resist diseases and the pesky bugs. Transplant them outside when they are fully established and able to thrive.
Keep your garden free from broad-spectrum pesticides. Besides killing the insects you don’t want, this type of pesticide will also kill beneficial insects. Beneficial bugs are more sensitive to these pesticides than the bugs that are detrimental to plants, so if the good bugs are eliminated, the bad pest population may grow. This will cause a cycle to start where you will need to keep increasing the amount of pesticide you are using.
Think about planting everbearing strawberries in your garden, especially if you have small children. For kids, there are few things as fun as picking fruit fresh from the garden. Your children will be much more interesting in helping out if they know they’ll get to enjoy some tasty strawberries.
It is simple to prepare your garden for perennial flowers. It isn’t as hard as it may seem; you basically just slice down under the turf, flip it over, and spread wood chips four to three inches. Wait two weeks or so, and then you are ready to jump right in with digging and planting.
When you are planning on growing a garden, you should think about the space you will need to provide a healthy growing area for your plants. Leave a little more space than you think your full grown plant will need to make up for overgrowth. Space is necessary not only for physical growth but also to help keep air circulation flowing within your garden. Therefore, ensure that you allow for ample spaces between your seedlings.
Regularity is the key to keeping your organic garden in order, don’t let your list of chores pile up. If you’re too busy to do all those little things each day, there are some small steps you can take to not have all that work build up on you. Grab a handful of weeds, throw down some mulch, or toss some water on it anytime you walk by.
Do you want to kill weeds in a natural way? Layer sheets of newspaper on the surface of areas where you are trying to control weeds. Like any other plant, weeds need to be exposed to the sun. When you cover weeds with newspaper layers, they suffocate due to lack of light. Newspapers tend to break down into compost nicely. To improve the appearance of newspaper, simply spread a bit of mulch over it.
Beer Trap
The simple beer trap is still one of the best methods of ridding your organic garden of slugs. To create a beer trap, dig a hole in your garden that is the depth of a glass jar, leaving the mouth of the jar level with the soil. Pour beer into the container to within an inch of the jar lip. Slugs are attracted to the beer and become trapped in the container.
Using a soaker hose to water your organic garden is the best method. This special type of hose allows water to slowly ooze out; the water then directly targets the roots and spares the leaves. A soaker-hose does a better job and is easier than using a sprinkler or watering can.
Increase the biodiversity in your organic garden. Variety in your garden has more potential to attract wildlife. Make your garden naturally inviting by planting many different kinds of plants. If you can accomplish this, your garden will be a pleasant place where you can relax, and you will have the satisfaction that comes from doing your bit for the environment.
As said previously, gardening can be rewarding if you are knowledgeable about the subject. Yet, if you have the knowledge and apply it to the best of your ability, then your garden should bloom and flourish before you know it. A beautiful garden requires the right tools, soil, water and sunlight.
